Chicago School District Proposes Taxes, Cuts To Balance Budget
AP-- The nation's third-largest school district on Tuesday proposed a $4.7 billion budget for 2007 that would increase property taxes and slash spending for some programs to help overcome a yawning deficit.
The Chicago Public Schools' budget for next year would include $88 million in reductions - $25 million through job cuts, a pay freeze and by shaving consultant costs, as well as $63 million in cuts for school-based programs.
``The only thing left to cut would have been teachers, and that's absolutely the wrong thing to do,'' said the district's chief executive officer, Arne Duncan. More.....
